With Winter coming in full force, we are moving to our Winter hours schedule. By keeping our public spaces heated, we run into the problem of astronomical utilities that stress our budget to the breaking point. The House of Art will be open by appointment for the next few months, until we resume our normal schedule. To come see us here, just call the Gallery phone, 304-324-4242, and give us a day’s notice. We are normally somewhere in the building and are more than happy to take you on a tour of the Ramsey. Stay safe and warm!

About the Calendar
John Velke, a long-time friend and supporter, fell in love with a stack of original Gary Bowling chicken cartoons showcasing Gary’s irreverent and quirky sense of humor. (These cartoons are from 25 years ago, proving that Gary has ALWAYS been a little warped). John bought the originals, found 14 of his favorites and had them made into a calendar. He then had 2000 of these calendars printed for the House of Art to sell in order to raise funds for the renovation and restoration of the Ramsey School, our historic and grand building. What a generous contribution to this 501 c3 organization, and an amazing idea, to boot! Thank you, John! Calendars are $10 each.

How It Helps
For the last two years, we have been slowly and steadily repairing and restoring what we could, with our limited funds, and using re-purposed, re-used, and re-imagined materials. Our main focus has been to replace the roof of the Ramsey because we have sustained much water damage throughout the building from the aged and failing roof. This year, we received the necessary funding for the roof replacement from the Shott Foundation and the West Virginia Division of Arts, Culture, and History and are so very grateful! We can now begin to focus on other areas of this magnificent building that served this community for so many decades, providing education, culture and entertainment, and showcasing Bluefield nationally as a vital and progressive commerce center. 100% of the sales of this calendar will help to further the mission of GBHA and restore and preserve the Grand Dame of Bluefield, Ramsey School. Calendars are $10 each.

On Saturday, August 31, the House of Art will be hosting the Opening Exhibit of West Virginia artist, Tom Acosta. Acosta paints with purpose, depicting contemporary social realities and everyday activities of ordinary people. The perfection he demands of himself and his finished pieces make it evident that his artistic endeavors are much more than a way to make a living. His work is divided into two categories: reality and fantasy allegorical.
Aside from work in the permanent collection at the Butler Institute, Tom has exhibited at the Clay Center, Tamarack, and the Gertrude Smith House in Mt. Airy, NC. His work evokes the regionalistic style of Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. Curator Barbara Moore told him, “Your work is dark like Andrew’s, but your palette is light like Jamie’s.” Acosta is represented at the Barbara Moore Gallery in Chadd’s Ford, PA, and the Cooper Gallery in Lewisburg, WV among others.
